Plan the bill / Ask about coverage

Find out what your plan can actually pay.

Use the exact medicine name, form, and reason for treatment when asking about insurance. Ask about your own plan rather than a general statement that insurance is accepted.

Ask for the payment rules.

The list of medicines covered by an insurance plan is called a formulary.

Prior authorization means the insurer must approve payment before the pharmacy fills the prescription.

Ask if the list includes the exact product, if that check is required, and which records the clinician needs to send.

Ask what your payment would be if approval is granted, and what happens if it is refused.

Medicare follows the reason for treatment.

As of September 26, 2026, medicines for weight loss alone remained outside Medicare’s ordinary drug benefit.

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) for type 2 diabetes and tirzepatide (Zepbound) for sleep apnea could instead qualify for ordinary drug coverage.

That did not guarantee payment: the plan’s covered-drug list and approval rules still mattered.

Medicare’s temporary payment option

As of September 26, 2026, people who qualified for the temporary Medicare GLP-1 Bridge paid $50 a month for certain weight medicines.

GLP-1 is the name of a gut hormone; it is also used as a label for this group of medicines.

The programme ran outside ordinary Part D payment, starting July 1, 2026, and continuing through December 31, 2027.

For Zepbound, it included only the KwikPen, a device for giving shots that holds several doses. It excluded small medicine bottles called vials and pens holding only one dose.

Your health history and Medicare plan had to meet the programme’s rules. If Part D had already paid for a medicine in this group for you in 2026, you could not join the Bridge in 2026. A prescription and approval before filling it were also required.

For the medicines it covers, Part D puts a yearly limit on the amount you pay from your own money. The Bridge’s $50 monthly charge was extra: it did not count toward that limit. Discount coupons could not reduce that charge.

Ask the plan and prescriber which route applies, using the current Medicare programme details on the reading page.
